Abstract: The main goal of this dissertation is to analyze the ways in which moral autonomy is portrayed in the Brazilian novel of the 1950s. Following the hypothesis formulated from previous works (CHAGAS, 2019; CHAGAS, BERTINATO, 2021), it is expected that the novels from this period would show a demarked interest in the moral autonomy of its characters, in contrast to the previous tradition, the one conventionally called the " 1930s novel", in which individuality often finds itself subjugated to universalizable moral norms. To confirm this, five novels are analyzed in detail - The Marble Dance, by Lygia Fagundes Telles, from 1954; A Time to Meet, by Fernando Sabino, from 1956; Marcore, by Antonio Olavo Pereira, from 1957; O ventre ["The Womb"], by Carlos Heitor Cony, form 1958; and Asfalto selvagem ["Savage Asphalt"], by Nelson Rodrigues, published as a serial between 1959 and 1960 - while others contemporary, earlier, and later works are mentioned in order to emphasize the continuities and divergences regarding the treatment of morals in the Brazilian novel. The analysis of morality, in turn, starts from the considerations of recent studies in the area (KEKES, 1989; KEKES, 1993; HAIDT, 2012; KEANE, 2016), in special their understanding of the moral life as something often manifested in implicit and intuitive ways.
