Abstract: The modal particles are an omnipresent part of the spoken German language. One of the most commonly used modal particles is ja. It has the function of referring to common or generally known knowledge and thus marking a statement as self-evident or undisputed. The modal particle ja can therefore function as a communicative strategy in the representation of knowledge, which is particularly relevant in examination interviews. Using authentic data from the spoken scientific language of the GeWiss corpus, this work examines the use of modal particles among L1 and L2 speakers. For this purpose, 224 examination interviews from the university context are quantitatively and qualitatively examined and the occurrences of the modal particles are classified with regard to the individual speaker, the first language as well as to function, position, combination and feedback. It turns out that the modal particle ja is indeed used as a communicative strategy in university exam interviews, but far more often by L1 speakers than by L2 speakers. From this the recommendation can be derived to integrate the different ways of using the modal particles as well as other communicative strategies in courses and material for scientific language for L2 speakers.
