Ser mulher : a representação da condição feminina e a loucura em O limiar de Susan Glaspell

Abstract

Resumo: O presente trabalho propõe fazer a análise da peça O Limiar, escrito por Susan Glaspell (1876-1948) - uma escritora estadunidense que foi de extrema importância no cenário literário do século XX mas que ainda é quase desconhecida no Brasil e não plenamente reconhecida até mesmo no seu país de origem. Escrita em 1921, a peça O Limiar foi bastante radical na época por conta do uso inovador de aspectos formais e temática, e apresenta uma discussão interessante da posição social da mulher na sociedade da época e a relação que se estabelece entre a instituição opressiva da sanidade e a possível libertação pela loucura. É objetivo deste trabalho a construção de uma análise da apresentação da protagonista de O Limiar bem como da loucura. Será feito um apanhado do contexto social e histórico ao qual a obra faz referência, além de uma breve introdução à produção dramática de Glaspell. A fim de fazer a análise da peça no que se refere ao tema da (in)sanidade e a experiência da protagonista na peça, será utilizada uma base teórica calcada na teoria literária feminista e nos conceitos provenientes da teoria feminista acerca dos distúrbios da mulher. Em suma, procura-se demonstrar a relevância do estudo de O Limiar, esta peça tão complexa embora ainda não muio conhecida, em termos de seu valor literário e importância histórica bem como de sua contribuição ao entendimento de perspectivas e experiências de mulheres. Abstract: The present study intends to present an analysis of The Verge, a play written by American writer Susan Glaspell (1876-1948). In spite of having been one of the most important playwrights of the twentieth century, she is still largely unknown in Brazil and she's not fully recognized even in her home country. Written in 1921, The Verge was quite radical in its innovative use of formal aspects and social themes, and it presents an interesting discussion of women's social position as well as the relationship established between the oppression of the institution of sanity and the possibility of liberation through madness. The aim of this study is building an analysis of how The Verge's protagonist and her madness are presented. In order to do so, it will be necessary to include an overview of the social and historical context to which Glaspell's play makesreference as well as a brief introduction to the playwright's work. The analysis of the play in terms of its portrayal of (in)sanity and the protagonist's experience will draw on a theoretical basis from feminist literary theory and feminist theory's conceptualization of women's mental disorders. The main objective is demonstrating the relevance of studies and discussions on a play as complex as The Verge (albeit still not very well known), in terms of its literary value and historical importance but also of its contribution to a further understanding of woemn's views and experiences.
