Colonialidade, identidades e autorização discursiva : reflexões a partir da tradução do conto

Abstract

Resumo: Nesta dissertação, debatemos de que maneira os personagens principais dos contos "The Ostrich" e "Missing Out", da autora sudanesa Leila Aboulela, negociam com a racialização de muçulmanos no Ocidente (Aziz, 2022), e apresentamos uma tradução do conto "The Ostrich" para o português. Em paralelo, abordamos o papel da tradução diante das tensões coloniais que perpassam a obra de Aboulela. Na primeira e na segunda seções do trabalho, recuperamos de que modo a modernidade/colonialidade se constitui e se legitima a partir da inferiorização de certos indivíduos e de suas subjetividades, debatendo como isso se estende para um processo de racialização das pessoas muçulmanas, em especial as mulheres muçulmanas que vivem em países ocidentais, como é o caso de Aboulela. No fim da segunda seção, abordamos como a literatura e a pesquisa acadêmica estão implicadas nas hierarquias modernas/coloniais. A terceira seção contém uma apresentação da autora Leila Aboulela e de suas obras já publicadas, além de salientar aspectos da sua biografia que são perceptíveis nos contos analisados ou relevantes para compreendê-los. Na quarta seção, há uma análise das personagens Sumra e Majdy, dos contos "The Ostrich" e "Missing Out", acompanhada do argumento de que a autora os constrói de modo que ambos extrapolam os estereótipos ocidentais a respeito das pessoas muçulmanas. A quinta seção contém comentários sobre a tradução do conto "The Ostrich" e do poema nele inserido. Na sexta seção, abordamos como a lógica moderna/colonial se reflete nas concepções sobre tradução e no mercado de trabalho contemporâneo. Mais para o fim dessa seção, abordamos o papel da tradução diante dos regimes de autorização discursiva (Ribeiro, 2017; Mombaça, 2017), refletindo sobre os motivos e os possíveis efeitos de empreender uma tradução do conto "The Ostrich" para o português. Nas Considerações Finais, refletimos sobre as limitações da pesquisa acadêmica em geral e deste trabalho em particular, além de argumentar que Aboulela desafia a visão orientalista (Said, 2003) sobre as populações muçulmanas ao construir personagens complexas que escapam a uma leitura simplista. Já a tradução é entendida como um instrumento capaz de promover a coalizão entre pessoas e grupos que ocupam diferentes espaços liminares ou de fronteira (Lugones, 2006) em relação às normas hegemônicas, de modo que um engajamento ético-político com esses temas influi nas escolhas tradutórias, ainda que isso nem sempre fique evidente para quem lê o texto traduzido

Abstract: In this master’s thesis, we discuss how the main characters of Leila Aboulela’s short stories "The Ostrich" and "Missing Out" negotiate with the racialization of Muslims in the West (Aziz, 2022), and we present a translation of "The Ostrich" to Brazilian Portuguese. We also address the role of translation in face of the colonial tensions that rise from Aboulela’s work. In Sections One and Two of this thesis, we elaborate how modernity/coloniality forges and legitimates itself by creating subaltern beings and subjectivities and discuss how this unravels into the racialization of Muslims, especially of Muslim women living in the West, like Aboulela. At the end of Section Two, we tackle how literature and academic research are intricately related to modern/colonial hierarchies. In Section Three, we present the author and its work, highlighting aspects of her biography that are reflected in her short stories and are relevant to our understanding of them. In Section Four, we analyze characters Sumra and Majdy, from "The Ostrich" and "Missing Out", arguing that they both exceed the limits of Western stereotypes around Muslim people. In Section Five, there are comments about the translation of "The Ostrich" and of a poem from Ibn Zaydun, partially reproduced by Aboulela in this short story. In Section Six, we address how the modern/colonial logic influences concepts of translation and shapes its contemporary labor market. At the end of this Section, we address the role of translation regarding regimes of discursive authorization (Ribeiro, 2017; Mombaça, 2017) and reflect on the reasons and possible outcomes of translating "The Ostrich" into Brazilian Portuguese. In the Conclusion, we tackle the limits of academic research in general and of this work in particular and argue that Aboulela defies the orientalist perspective (Said, 2003) on Muslim people by building complex characters that slip away from simplistic interpretations. Translation is also seen as an instrument to promote coalition among individuals and groups that occupy liminal spaces of the hegemonic norms (Lugones, 2006), and we argue that an ethical political engagement with these issues may interfere with translation choices, even though this may not be noticeable to the reader
