O estudo sócio-histórico-cultural e o processo tradutório : um projeto de tradução de Push-Push! and other stories, de Sindiwe Magona (1996/2001)

Abstract

Resumo: Nesta dissertação, apresentamos uma proposta de tradução dos contos "House- Hunting Unlike Soweto", "The Sacrificial Lamb" e "The Widow", presentes na obra Push-push! and other stories (1996/2001), da autora sul-africana Sindiwe Magona, levando em consideração a observação de fatores sociais, históricos e culturais da África do Sul. Por esse motivo, na segunda seção da dissertação, recuperamos elementos da história do país, e, na sequência, fazemos uma introdução da autora, a fim de demonstrar como seu contexto de produção impacta ou é refletido em sua obra; por fim, trazemos um breve histórico sobre a tradição sul-africana de escrita de contos e a frequente inserção de elementos da oralidade em textos escritos em diferentes épocas da produção literária do país. Na terceira seção, retomamos autores e conceitos que embasaram a análise e a tradução dos contos, não somente no âmbito da tradução literária, mas também nos campos dos estudos decoloniais, feministas (sobretudo com foco em mulheres negras) e translinguísticos, de modo a reforçar a importância de assumir pontos de vista diferentes e interseccionais ao propor leituras e traduções de uma obra como essa. Na quarta seção, apresentamos aspectos do livro, breves resumos comentados de todos os contos presentes nele, e discutimos com mais profundidade os textos traduzidos e pormenores do processo de tradução e de análise de cada um deles, cotejando-os com textos de outros gêneros (não apenas literários). Por fim, nas Considerações Finais, defendemos que a tradução de textos de (autores e autoras como) Sindiwe Magona representa ganhos não apenas literários, mas também a possibilidade de estabelecimento de paralelos ou mesmo convergências entre a África do Sul e o Brasil, visto que, embora existam particularidades e idiossincrasias que devem ser observadas e respeitadas, há muitos fatores que aproximam as sociedades, histórias e culturas dos dois países, como bem ilustram as análises e traduções dos contos supracitados.

Abstract: In this dissertation, we present a translation proposal for the short stories "House- Hunting Unlike Soweto", "The Sacrificial Lamb" and "The Widow", present in the book Push-push! and other stories (1996/2001), written by the South African author Sindiwe Magona, taking into account the observation of social, historical, and cultural factors in South Africa. For this reason, in the second section of the dissertation, we retrieve elements of the country's history, and then introduce the author, to demonstrate how her production context impacts or is reflected in her work; finally, we provide a brief history of the South African tradition of short stories writing and the frequent insertion of oral elements in texts written at different periods of the country's literary production. In the third section, we return to authors and concepts that supported the analysis and translation of the stories, not only in the context of literary translation but also in the fields of decolonial, feminist (focusing especially on black women), and translinguistic studies, in order to reinforce the importance of assuming different and intersectional points of view when proposing readings and translations of a work such as this. In the fourth section, we present aspects of the book, brief annotated summaries of all the stories in it, and discuss in depth the translated texts and details of the translation and analysis process of each of them, comparing them with texts from other genres (not just literary). Lastly, we argue that the translation of texts by (authors such as) Sindiwe Magona represents not only literary gains, but also the possibility of establishing parallels or even convergences between South Africa and Brazil, since, although particularities and idiosyncrasies must be observed and respected, there are many factors that bring the societies, histories and cultures of the two countries together, as the analyses and translations of the aforementioned stories clearly illustrate.
