Abstract: This study delves into the role of imagery, particularly photographic imagery, in either upholding or challenging specific normative frameworks. To achieve this, drawing upon Judith Butler's framing concept, we aim to pinpoint the normative intricacies of imagery and their intersections with contemporary legal structures. This analysis, rooted in the political agency of framing and consequently photography, allows us, initially, to comprehend how photographic composition establishes visible lives and their hierarchical distribution within the realm of appearance. In other words, it explores how normative frameworks within photographic records relate to the perpetuation of inequalities and exclusions in the legal-political sphere. Moreover, we will explore the transitive capacity of imagery, wherein the violated body, previously disregarded, may reclaim its humanity, eliciting empathy and critique. It is through the (re)framing of such portrayals that a new interpretative framework enables ethical reconsideration and the acknowledgment of humanity where it was previously imperceptible.
