Abstract: This essay aims to investigate the possibility of reading the novel A noite da espera, by Milton Hatoum, as a historical fiction. The plot is set during the civil-military dictatorship that devastated Brazil between 1964 and 1985. The cities of Brasília and Paris are the spaces through which Martim, the narrator, in two different periods, exposes his experience of estrangement from his mother, while he is crossed by the violence, repression, and brutality of the authoritarian regime, which culminates in his exile. The path of this analysis begins with reflections on the historical context, based on the knowledge of historiography, to point out the political and social situation that crosses the experience of those exposed to that conjuncture. Next, based on theories about femininities and masculinities, it investigates how the characters have their existences linked to the circumstances in which they are inserted. At the end, resorting to the theoretical contribution of Lejeune (2008) and Ricoeur (2007), it is verified in what way the fictional discourses of the diary and memory, incorporated by the narrator, converge to expand the panorama of individual and collective experience of the fictionalized period.
