Abstract: "Social issue" is understood as the phenomenon of impoverishment that began after the Industrial Revolution, in the 19th century, when humankind developed the scientific and technological resources to expand its productive capacity to enable the reduction, if not the total elimination, of poverty. According to the critical perspective of Political Economy, the "social issue" is acknowledged as the inequality inherent to the capitalist way of production and its consequence is the maintenance of poverty amidst an environment of prosperity; from this all forms of inequality surface and this matter can only be solved with the suppression of the current productive regime. However, from a conservative point of view, the economy tends to self-regulate, the national economic growth and the "progress" are supposed to mitigate poverty, and it is the nation's responsibility, through public polices, to promote assistance and encouragement of personal development, allowing individuals to achieve the insertion in the work force and social mobility by their own means. Literature has, in the works of several authors in Brazil and in other countries of the world, represented the "social issue" and its expressions, either by approaching the critical perspective, in a Marxist point of view, or by adopting a traditional, conservative viewpoint. This work aims to analyze the short stories of two Brazilian writers that, through their work, highlighted the poor, the marginalized and the excluded; in other words, authors whose works referred in some way the "social issue": Monteiro Lobato (1882 - 1948) and Lima Barreto (1881 - 1922). The selected stories present the following expressions of the social issue: poverty, social exclusion and subalternity resulting from ethnic-racial or gender relations, and unequal development between the city and the countryside. The analysis sought to understand how the "social issue" was addressed by Monteiro Lobato and Lima Barreto and whether the scrutinized texts indicated a critical or conservative perspective.
