Testes orais individuais e em pares : um estudo das diferenças de desempenho

Abstract

Resumo: Os testes orais em língua inglesa da Universidade de Cambridge são elaborados para serem utilizados com dois (ou em casos excepcionais três) candidatos e dois examinadores (um interlocutor e um avaliador). Entretanto, alguns professores relatam que os estudantes freqüentemente dizem preferir fazer os testes sozinhos (em uma situação candidato-examinador). Para sabermos se de fato há diferenças no desempenho se os candidatos fizerem o teste sozinhos ou em pares, foram aplicadas versões diferentes do First Certificate in English (FCE), partes três e quatro, para dez alunos formandos do Curso de Letras da Universidade Federal do Paraná. Em uma situação, cada candidato interagiu com um outro candidato e com o examinador, e na outra, o candidato fez o teste sozinho com o examinador. Todos os testes foram gravados e transcritos com o objetivo de verificarmos se houve variação na linguagem produzida pelos sujeitos com relação ao número total de palavras, diversidade de vocabulário e complexidade gramatical. Após o segundo teste, os participantes responderam a um questionário para informar suas opiniões a respeito das duas situações de teste. Uma análise estatística mostrou uma diferença significativa nos três aspectos da linguagem produzida pelos candidatos. Apesar de haver uma tendência em falar mais, usar uma maior diversidade de vocabulário e uma maior complexidade gramatical no teste em pares, oito dos dez candidatos manifestaram uma preferência pela realização do teste individual.

Abstract: The University of Cambridge speaking tests in English are now designed to be used with two (or in exceptional cases three) candidates and two examiners (an interlocutor and an assessor). However, some teachers report that students often express the opinion that they would prefer to take speaking tests alone (i.e., in a one-to-one situation with the examiner). To find out whether there are in fact differences in performance if candidates take the test alone or in pairs, we applied two parallel versions of the FCE (First Certificate in English), parts 3 and 4, to ten undergraduate students of the Federal University of Paraná. On one occasion each candidate took the test with a colleague and the examiner, while on the other occasion the candidate was alone with the examiner. All the tests were recorded and transcribed in order to discover if there was any significant variation in the amount of language, vocabulary range and grammatical complexity produced by the candidates. After the second test, candidates completed a questionnaire regarding their feelings about the two test situations. A statistical analysis showed a significant difference in all three aspects of language produced by the candidates. Although the overall tendency was for candidates to speak more, use a greater variety of vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures in the paired test format, eight of the ten nevertheless expressed a preference for the one-to-one format.
