O contexto de surgimento do romance de Heian : poligênese e historiografia

Abstract

Resumo: A historiografia e teoria do romance são geralmente associadas com o período moderno e o surgimento do gênero com o continente europeu. Nas últimas décadas, outras perspectivas sobre o gênero têm sido propostas, como a poligênese do romance. Segundo essa hipótese, o gênero teria surgido múltiplas vezes, em diversos períodos (desde a Antiguidade) e locais (incluindo a Ásia, o Oriente Médio, Américas) e sua história seria composta por uma variedade de trajetórias evolutivas. Dessa forma, esse corpus mais abrangente exige uma investigação sobre esses diferentes contextos de surgimento do romance. Esse é o caso do surgimento do romance no Japão de Heian, na forma do monogatari (geralmente traduzido como "conto" ou "narrativa"). Partindo do pressuposto de que esse tipo de narrativa poderia ser considerado um romance, a pesquisa busca analisar o Genji monogatari, suas características e contexto histórico. Para comparar a similaridades entre essa obra e outras classificadas dentro do domínio do romance, elementos frequentemente encontrados nas mais diversas variedades de romances, os seus princípios transhistóricos, serão analisados. Esses princípios são o caráter ficcional, a escrita em prosa, a remissão à vida prosaica e a marginalização inicial na cultura letrada. Em seguida, para compreender as particularidades do Genji monogatari, suas características idiossincráticas são discutidas. A ausência de elementos fantasiosos, a temática do desejo, a temática da efemeridade da vida e a associação com o feminino são todos elementos particulares da obra fortemente influenciados pelo contexto histórico em que foi escrita. Outra característica comum no romance nas suas mais diversas iterações é a sua flexibilidade e capacidade de incorporação de diferentes gêneros literários e de discurso. A presença desses outros gêneros, segundo o modelo proposto por Jane Smiley, é investigada no Genji monogatari, onde puderam ser identificados a História, a fofoca (gossip) e a narrativa romântica. Por fim, para melhor compreender as condições para o surgimento do romance, uma comparação entre similaridades no contexto histórico do período Heian e de outros contextos de aparecimento do gênero é realizada. Nesse tópico, as semelhanças identificadas são o estabelecimento de uma identidade nacional e a popularização do uso de uma linguagem vernacular e a disponibilidade de tempo ocioso. A partir dessa análise das características da obra e de seu contexto de surgimento, a pesquisa contribui para a construção desse corpus mais abrangente do romance e de sua poligênese.

Abstract: The historiography and theory of the novel are generally associated with the modern period and the genre's emergence with the European continent. In the last decades, other perspectives on the genre have been proposed, such as the polygenesis of the novel. According to this hypothesis, the genre would have appeared multiple times, in different periods (since Antiquity) and locations (including Asia, the Middle East, the Americas) and its history would be composed by a variety of evolutionary trajectories. Thus, this broader corpus requires an investigation into these different contexts in which the novel emerged. Such is the case with the emergence of the novel in Heian's Japan, in the form of the monogatari (usually translated as "tale" or "narrative"). Assuming that this type of narrative could be considered a novel, the research seeks to analyze the Genji monogatari, its characteristics and historical context. To compare the similarities between this work and others classified within the domain of the novel, elements often found in the most diverse varieties of novels, their transhistorical principles, will be analyzed. These principles are fictionality, prose writing, remission to prosaic life and initial marginalization in literate culture. Then, to understand the particularities of Genji monogatari, its idiosyncratic characteristics are discussed. The absence of fantastical elements, the theme of desire, the theme of the ephemerality of life and the association with the feminine are all particular elements of the work strongly influenced by the historical context in which it was written. Another common feature of the novel in its most diverse iterations is its flexibility and ability to incorporate different literary and discourse genres. The presence of these other genres, according to the model proposed by Jane Smiley, is investigated in Genji monogatari, where History, gossip and romantic narrative could be identified. Finally, to better understand the conditions for the emergence of the novel, a comparison between similarities in the historical context of the Heian period and other contexts of emergence of the genre is carried out. In this topic, the identified similarities are the establishment of a national identity and the popularization of the use of a vernacular language and the availability of idle time. From this analysis of the characteristics of the work and its context of emergence, the research contributes to the construction of this broader corpus of the novel and its polygenesis.
