A liberdade em O prisioneiro de Erico Verissimo : uma perspectiva sartreana

Abstract

Resumo: A presente pesquisa debruça-se sobre o romance O prisioneiro de Erico Verissimo para investigar a liberdade presente na obra. A análise literária aborda o romance de diversas maneiras, relacionando teorias existencialistas sartreanas utilizadas como referencial teórico, assim como se utiliza de outros filósofos contemporâneos de Sartre para enriquecer a análise. É importante observar na escrita de Verissimo que a escolha da ambientação, o não nomear os lugares, nem os eventos que aconteceram ou ainda as personagens na narrativa demonstram o engajamento do autor ao escrever esse romance. Sartre é utilizado como referencial teórico e sua filosofia é utilizada por diversas vezes para aprofundar a pesquisa acerca dos personagens e de suas motivações. Ao longo do desenvolvimento do estudo, foram analisadas todas as personagens do romance e como elas não se sentem livres ao longo da história. Analisou-se também o racismo descrito e criticado pelo autor, bem como o suicídio: temas de extrema importância para se debater atualmente e que possuem relação direta com a liberdade. Neste trabalho são apresentados os eventos históricos que podem ser relacionados aos descritos na narrativa e apontamos a liberdade sartreana que se encontra nas tomadas de decisões das personagens. Dessa maneira, em diferentes aspectos, a liberdade é considerada o cerne da obra de Verissimo, e Sartre é o pensador contemporâneo do romancista que melhor condiz com suas ideias e que pode proporcionar maior entendimento à obra. De certo modo, há uma relação de aproximação entre a obra de Verissimo e a filosofia de Sartre, pois ambos eram humanistas e engajados em suas sociedades.

Abstract: The present research focuses on the novel The Prisoner by Erico Verissimo to investigate the freedom inside this book. Literary analysis approaches the novel in different ways, relating Sartre's existentialist theories used as a theoretical framework, such as other philosophers contemporary to Sartre to enrich the analysis. It is important to register in Verissimo's writing that the choice of setting, the suppression of names, the places, the events that happened, or the characters in the narrative demonstrate the author's engagement in writing this novel. Sartre's work is used as a theoretical reference and his philosophy is analyzed several times to deepen the research about the characters and their motivations. Throughout the development of the study, it was analyzed all the characters in the novel and how they do not feel free throughout the story. It is also analyzed the racism described and criticized by the author, as well as suicide: topics of extreme importance to be debated nowadays, besides being topics that have a direct connection with freedom. In this dissertation it is presented the historical events that can be related to those described in the narrative and pointed out the Sartrean freedom that is found in the decision-making of the characters. In this way, in different aspects, freedom is considered the core of Verissimo's novel, and Sartre is the contemporary philosopher of the novelist who best matches his ideas and brings greater understanding to the work. In a way, there is a close relationship between Verissimo's work and Sartre's philosophy, as both were humanists and engaged in their societies.
