Abstract: The evolution of the Portuguese language in Angola is essentially marked by its lexical renewal. Considering the relevance of linguistic renewal and creation, the purpose of this research is to investigate neologisms in the Portuguese language spoken in Angola. Our goal is to analyze the new lexical units of the orality of Angolan Portuguese, and to observe their diffusion among speakers in order to verify if social variables –such as "gender", "age group", "level of education", and "origin"– influence the criterion of awareness of neologisms. This research is built on the concepts of neology, neologism, and of types of neologisms according to Alves (1990), (1996), (2001), Guilbert (1975), Cabré (2003), Carvalho (1987), (1989), (2012), Correia (1998) and Ferraz (2006). As for the methodology, the vocables that have been cataloged were extracted from the lyrics of songs by Angolan singers of the most varied musical styles. The terminological description sheet proposed by Faulstich (1995) was selected as the method of analysis of linguistic novelties. Data on both the influence and the relation to social variables was gathered and verified with the use of an online questionnaire. Therefore, our methodological procedures are divided into two stages: one that comprises the linguistic analysis of neologisms, and another that involves the discussion of the data obtained from the application of the research questionnaire. The results of this research indicate that the neologisms of Angolan Portuguese are popular among the people surveyed. As for the neological formation process, we identified that words are constructed through vernacular processes, as well as through borrowings from other languages like Kimbundu and English.
