Abstract: In the last few decades, bilingual schools have multiplied at an accelerated pace around the world and have also been widely established in Brazil. Behind this conception, there is a search for bilingual education in order to provide a multidimensional view of language learning, from a cultural diversity perspective. Therefore, the immersive approach of a second language (L2) gains space within this bilingual educational universe. A persistent issue in immersion education converges to the appropriate use of the first language (L1) in the learning of the target language. In recent years, several studies have investigated the speech of teachers and students in bilingual contexts and their role in learning L2. The current thesis brings a reflection on the L1-L2 relationship in classrooms for learning German as a Foreign Language and, for this purpose, a two-year study in elementary school was conducted in a bilingual school in Curitiba, Brazil. In research, an immersive approach was implemented without the use of L1 by the teacher/researcher and, in the same sense, students should preferably communicate at L2 with the teacher/researcher. The empirical study, predominantly qualitative, sought to examine the school performance of learning L2 from two groups - the experimental group with the limitation of the use of L1 and the control group with opportune use of L1. For this end, participant observations were conducted in the experimental group and comparison of the results of the annual German tests of both groups. The research generated guiding principles with the aim of helping language teachers to make decisions about their language use choices in the immersion classroom.
