Há um prazer em cantar : uma introdução à poesia de Robert Browning

Abstract

Resumo: Robert Browning é um dos poetas vitorianos mais populares e influentes de todos os tempos. Obras acadêmicas e críticas sobre sua poesia são publicadas todos os anos, e existem muitas biografias, handbooks, estudos críticos e coleções de cartas listadas nas várias bibliografias especializadas sobre Browning e a poesia vitoriana em geral. A despeito de toda essa grande popularidade do poeta no mundo anglófono, no Brasil o poeta é quase um personagem secundário na história de amor entre ele e sua esposa, mais famosa por aqui. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de introduzir o poeta Robert Browning para o público brasileiro. Inicio essa introdução comentando brevemente sobre a vida e obra do poeta e, em seguida, apresento um levantamento geral sobre o que foi dito sobre Robert Browning e os poemas que foram traduzidos em português. O trabalho se foca em analisar e explicar os elementos constituintes da poesia de Browning, a forma e estrutura de seus poemas, apresentado um retrato geral de sua obra, e fazendo uma leitura crítica de três monólogos característicos do início de sua obra madura: 'Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister', 'Count Gismond' e 'Pictor Ignotus'. Concluo a dissertação apresentando uma tradução portuguesa dos três poemas já mencionados. Espero que com este trabalho o reconhecimento do gênio de Browning seja maior no mundo lusófono, bem como a compreensão da poesia vitoriana em geral. Abstract: Robert Browning is one of most popular and influential Victorian poet, at all times. Scholarly and critical works about the poet are published every year, and there are many biographies, handbooks, studies, collections of letters listed in various of the specialized bibliographies about Browning and Victorian poetry in general. Despite the large popularity of the poet in the Anglophone world, in Brazil Robert Browning is almost a secondary character in the Barrett-Browning love story. This work aims to introduce the poet Robert Browning to the Brazilian public. I start the introduction by presenting a brief commentary about the life and works of Robert Browning and after that, I make a general survey of what exists of the poet in Portuguese, between critical works and translated poems. This work is focused on analyzing and explaining the constitutional elements of Browning's poetry, the form, and structure of his poems, presenting a general picture of his work, and reading three characteristic monologues from the early mature work (Soliloquy of Spanish Cloister, Count Gismond, and Pictor Ignotus) critically. I conclude the thesis presenting a Portuguese translation of the three above mentioned poems. I hope that this work will promote the recognition of Browning's genius in the Lusophone world, and the understanding of Victorian poetry in general.
