Palavras-chave: ESP; ELF; ensino da língua inglesa Abstract: English for specific purposes (ESP) and English as a lingua franca (ELF) are two different theories, with two different foci and different pedagogical implications, at least at first glance. Recent studies have explored the convergences of both fields, showing that they share common ground (Nickerson, 2012). However, given the incipient nature of ELF, little is known about how teachers (specifically in the case of Brazil) may combine the two theories in practice. The aim of this master's thesis is to investigate the perceptions of English teachers regarding the possibility of working with ESP and ELF in a combined manner. Based on both theoretical frameworks (JENKINS, 2000, 2011, 2015; CANAGARAJAH, 2013; BELCHER, 2009; CELANI, 1983, 1998;KACHRU, 1992, 1996; NICKERSON, 2013; entre outros) and also on the presentation of the results of a qualitative survey and interview conducted with teachers from higher education institutions, I sought to understand how teachers with knowledge about both theories see the convergences and divergences between them and the possibilities that their combined use can bring to the practice of English language teaching. Based on the answers of the participants, it was possible to observe that there is knowledge from the teachers about ELF and related perspectives, as well as the possibilities that these teachers have to use these perspectives in activities that they take to the classroom. Keywords: ESP; ELF, English language teaching
