A intrínseca relação entre poesia e pintura em Songs of innocence and of experience, de William Blake

Abstract

Resumo: A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo explorar a ideia de complementaridade e unidade entre texto e imagem nos illuminated books (livros iluminados) de William Blake - mais especificamente em Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1794) -, reforçando a imagem de Blake como pintor e dando continuidade ao debate levantado por críticos importantes nos estudos blakianos, como Erdamn, Eaves, Ward, Essick, Calado, Cardoso, Tavares, entre outros. Para isso, inicialmente será proposto um percurso pela trajetória artística de Blake, com foco em sua relação com a Royal Academy e seu desenvolvimento como pintor e poeta. Em seguida, abordaremos a relação poesia-pintura nos livros iluminados, discutindo as razões pelas quais sua obra foi segregada e como os poemas ocuparam um lugar de soberania em relação às gravuras/pinturas que os acompanham. Ainda, observando a atual facilidade de acesso aos facsímiles dos illuminated books, será apresentada uma discussão sobre os poemas iluminados mais expressivos de Songs of Innocence and of Experience sob um olhar de unidade, isto é, buscando interpretações que unam as duas linguagens (pintura e poesia) utilizadas pelo artista. Dessa maneira, serão observados não apenas os versos, mas as imagens das placas que compõem a obra, com a intenção de ampliar e enriquecer o debate nos Estudos Literários brasileiros acerca dos illuminated books de William Blake. Abstract: This research aims to explore the idea of unity between text and image in William Blake's illuminated books, more specifically in Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1794), reinforcing Blake's image as a painter and also continuing the debate raised by important critics in Blakian studies, such as Erdamn, Eaves, Ward, Essick, Calado, Cardoso, Tavares, among others. To this end, it will initially be proposed a journey through Blake's artistic trajectory, focusing on his relationship with the Royal Academy and his development as a painter and poet. Then, we will approach the relation between painting and poetry in the illuminated books, discussing the reasons why his work was segregated and how the poems occupied a place of sovereignty in relation to the engravings/paintings which accompany them. Still, noting the current ease of access to the illuminated books facsimiles, a discussion on the most expressive illuminated poems of Songs of Innocence and of Experience will be presented under a look of unity, that is, seeking interpretations that unite the two languages (poetry and painting) used by the artist. In this way, it will be observed not only the verses, but the images of the plates that make up the work, with the intention of expanding and enriching the debate in Brazilian Literary Studies about William Blake's illuminated books.
