Investigando atitudes de leitura entre aprendizes de Inglês como língua estrangeira : diferença entre readers e textos autênticos

Abstract

Resumo: A importância da leitura no processo de aquisição de língua estrangeira é defendida por muitos pesquisadores e tem na leitura extensiva seu principal representante (e.g., DAY; BAMFORD,1998; KRASHEN,1993; NUTTAL, 2000; BROWN, 2001; AEBERSOLD; FIELD, 1997; GRABE, 2010). Entre os vários tipos de textos que podem ser utilizados, resta-nos saber se o uso de um gênero ou outro proporciona efeitos diferentes do ponto de vista pedagógico. Esta pesquisa pretende investigar se existem diferenças entre os processos e atitudes de leitura de readers ou graded readers (textos simplificados) e textos originais nãosimplificados (doravante, textos autênticos), entre aprendizes adultos de inglês como língua estrangeira. Nesta pesquisa a metodologia utilizada foi a qualitativa, utilizando como instrumentos questionários e entrevistas semi-estruturadas e teve como participantes dois grupos de alunos de Letras da UFPR, que realizaram a leitura de readers e de materiais não simplificados. A observação dos alunos aconteceu mediante encontros semanais, no período de cinco semanas quando foram discutidas as experiências de leitura do grupo, focando em suas atitudes de leitura, mais especificamente a motivação, segurança, prazer da leitura e demais sensações causadas durante o processo. Como resultado, foi possível identificar como o perfil dos participantes pode influenciar a leitura (escolhas, comportamentos e atitudes), assim como o local onde ela ocorre. Também apontamos a importância da escolha do nível linguístico adequado do material de leitura e sua autenticidade ao gênero. Abstract: The importance of reading in second language acquisition is defended by many reasearches and the extensive reading is its main representative (e.g., DAY; BAMFORD,1998; KRASHEN,1993; NUTTAL, 2000; BROWN, 2001; AEBERSOLD; FIELD, 1997; GRABE, 2010). Among the various types of texts that can be used, it remains to be seen whether the use of one genre or another provides different effects from a pedagogical point of view. This research intends to investigate if there are differences between the processes and atitudes of reading readers or graded readers (simplified texts) and original non-simplified texts (henceforth, authentic), among adult learners of English as a foreign language. In this research the methodology used was the qualitative, using as instruments questionnaires and semi structured interviews, and had as participants two groups of English undergraduate students from UFPR, who have read readers and authentic texts. The sudents were observed weekly, during five weeks, where their reading experiences were discussed, focusing on their reading atitudes, with emphasis on motivation, safety and reading pleasure and other sensations caused during the process. As a result, it was possible to identify how the participants' profile can influence their reading process (choices, behavious and atitudes), as well as the place where the reading occurs. We also point out the importance of choosing the appropriate linguistic level of the reading material and its authenticity to the genre.
