Abstract: The tragedy Othello (1603-1604) is one of the four greatest tragedies which were written by William Shakespeare. Considering that the author's plays were written for the stage, this research presents, firstly, a historical panorama of Otelo's re-creations in the Brazilian theatre. I also discuss the issues of illusionism and epic distancing effect, considering that Brazilian theatre practitioners have been influenced by Bertolt Brecht's theories since the 1960's. Finally, the last goal of this research is to analyze the play Otelo, as faces do ciúme, which was directed by Sílvia Monteiro, and was performed in Curitiba, in 2009. It has revealed to be a great contribution to understand the actions and reactions of human beings, when they are faced with opposing forces. On stage, six actors/characters experienced their tragedies through all the days of the past and present. The adaptation was modified in relation to space and temporal contexts, resulting in an updating of Shakespeare's play. The spectator was encouraged to reflect about its own historical reality, which can be criticized and transformed. Nevertheless, it can be said that the adaptation created two moments of confrontation on stage: The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice within its own literary and cultural context and, obviously, the moment of the spectator within its own referential reality. Keywords: Intermediality. William Shakespeare. The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice. Brazilian theatre. Otelo, as faces do ciúme.
