A sintaxe dos adjetivos atributivos

Abstract

Resumo: Este trabalho tem por objetivo delinear o panorama translinguístico quanto ao comportamento e demais fenômenos que envolvem adjetivos em posição atributiva. Argumentamos que adjetivos nessa posição apresentam particularidades em relação a suas contrapartes predicativas, nomeadamente duas leituras possíveis e restrições de ordenamento não vislumbradas naquela posição (AOR), além de apresentarem duas formas de modificar o nome, hierarquicamente ou em paralelo. Considerando que os dados colhidos de diversas línguas com ordem dos adjetivos preferencial ou rígida atestam sempre o mesmo ordenamento, defendemos que há uma ordem subjacente universal. Seguimos Sproat & Shih (1991) e Cinque (2010) em assumir que as duas leituras possíveis são derivadas de duas formas de inserção de adjetivos no DP: por modificação direta ou por modificação indireta (caso em que os adjetivos seriam, na realidade, orações relativas reduzidas). Quanto ao PB, retomamos os trabalhos de Borges Neto (1979), Boff (1991), Menuzzi (1992), Nunes-Pemberton (2000) e Müller, Negrão & Nunes-Pemberton (2002) para apontarmos as propriedades da posição prénominal, as restrições de alguns itens na posposição e questionarmos o estatuto de "adjetivos" de certos itens lexicais. Levando em conta o conjunto dos dados expostos, adotamos a análise de Cinque (2010) para a estrutura dos adjetivos atributivos, contra Dirven (1999), Rosato (2013), Prim (2015) e propostas que tentam derivar os fenômenos expostos a partir de uma abordagem simétrica. Propomos ainda que algumas das críticas feitas à Hipótese do Movimento de Constituintes, como a natureza axiomática das projeções funcionais e a ausência de motivação para o movimento, poderiam ser reparadas se adotássemos hipóteses como as apresentadas por Svenonius (2008) e Panayidou (2013); ressaltamos, entretanto, que esse modelo ainda precisa ser enriquecido para dar conta do comportamento dos adjetivos em PB, especialmente na anteposição, que evidenciam a necessidade de projeções relacionadas à intensificação, avaliação, e possivelmente posições para hospedar adjetivos oriundos de movimento. Abstract: This work aims to outline a cross-linguistic overview of attributive adjetives, their behavior and additional phenomena related to them. We argue that adnominal adjectives show some singularities when compares to their predicative counterparts, namely exhibiting two different readings and ordering restrictions (AOR), besides being able to modify the name in two different ways, hierarchically or in parallel. Considering that the collected data from several languages that display either preferential or rigid ordering restrictions attest always the same order, we claim there is an underlying universal order. We follow Sproat & Shih (1991) and Cinque (2010) in that the two possible adjectival readings in attributive position are the result of two different ways of inserting adjetives in the DP, by direct or indirect modification (in the latter case, adjetives being actually reduced relative clauses). As for Brazilian Portuguese, we survey the works of Borges Neto (1979), Boff (1991), Menuzzi (1992), Nunes- Pemberton (2000) and Müller, Negrão & Nunes-Pemberton (2002) to indicate the properties of the attributive position, the restrictions affecting postnominal adjetives and also to call into question the adequacy of the label "adjective" for certain lexical items. Taking into account the set of collected data, we assume Cinque (2010)'s analysis for the structure of attributive adjectives, against Dirven (1999), Rosato (2013), Prim (2015) and other proposals that try to derive these phenomena from a symmetric approach. We also suggest that some of the criticisms faced by the Constituent Movement Hypothesis, as the axiomatic nature of the functional projections ir the absense of motivation for the movement itself, could be remedied by adopting hypotheses as the ones put forward by Svenonius (2008) and Panayidou (2013). We stress, however, that this model still demands some enrichment to be able to account for the behaviour of adjectives in Brazilian Portuguese, particularly adjectives that appear before the noun, which present evidence towards the need of assuming new projections related to intensification, evaluation and possibly positions that could host moved adjectives.
