Narrativas indígenas sul-africanas em tradução : estudo e tradução da obra The Stars Say ‘Tsau’, de Antjie Krog

Abstract

Resumo: Esta dissertação dedica-se à leitura, análise e tradução de poemas selecionados da obra The Stars Say ‘Tsau’: /Xam Poetry of Diä!kwain, Kweiten-ta-//ken, /A!kúnta, /Han?kass'o, and //Kabbo (2004b), da poeta e tradutora africâner Antjie Krog. O livro, apresentado como uma adaptação poética em língua inglesa, tem como base um conjunto de narrativas indígenas |xam, transcritas e traduzidas no final do século XIX, por Wilhelm Bleek e Lucy Lloyd, reunidas posteriormente em Specimens of Bushman Folklore (1911). O objetivo central da pesquisa foi apresentar e analisar a especificidade da obra de Krog, e traduzir uma seleção de poemas da obra para o português, observando os procedimentos de adaptação mobilizados pela autora e aquilo que distingue sua obra de outras reescritas literárias baseadas no mesmo corpus etnográfico. Assim, a dissertação também mantém, em seu horizonte de leitura, a versão em africâner, Die sterre sê ‘Tsau’ (2004), e demais textos orbitantes. Trata-se aqui de encarar a tradução como um espaço de negociação e construção de relações e, de acordo com Maurício Mendonça Cardozo (2009), como uma forma de equacionar relações, seja entre autor e tradutor, entre duas obras, duas línguas ou mesmo duas culturas. Esta perspectiva amplia a compreensão da tradução, posicionando-a como um campo de interações multiculturais, onde a tradução rompe e transforma, apresentando o outro como uma forma singular de vida, uma alteridade. A dissertação organiza-se em três partes principais: a primeira apresenta aspectos históricos, culturais e cosmológicos do povo |xam e contextualiza a produção, a organização e a recepção das fontes etnográficas; a segunda parte dedica-se à análise da trajetória literária de Antjie Krog e ao exame de The Stars Say ‘Tsau’, com atenção às justificativas da autora, às escolhas editoriais e aos procedimentos de versificação adotados; na terceira e última parte – tendo por base Mauricio Cardozo (2021), Jean-Luc Nancy (2013), Haroldo de Campos (2015), Matheus Barreto (2022), Michael Wessels (2010) e Roger Hewitt (2001) –, desenvolve-se uma análise acompanhada de tradução comentada do poema "the milky way and the stars" (2004b, p. 41), seguida da tradução de uma seleção de poemas representativos das temáticas recorrentes na obra, contemplando ao menos um poema atribuído a cada narrador indígena, com especial atenção às narrativas de !kweiten-ta-||ken, uma das poucas mulheres bosquímanas adultas a serem entrevistadas

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the review, analysis, and translation of selected poems in The Stars Say ‘Tsau’: /Xam Poetry of Diä!kwain, Kweiten-ta-//ken, /A!kúnta, /Han?kass'o, and //Kabbo (2004b), by the Afrikaner journalist, poet, and translator Antjie Krog. Presented as a poetic adaptation in English, the book draws upon a selection of indigenous |xam narratives. These materials were originally transcribed and translated in the late nineteenth century by Wilhelm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd, and were later published in Specimens of Bushman Folklore (1911). The primary aim of this research is to analyse the specificity of Krog’s work and to translate a selection of her poems into Portuguese, attending closely to the procedures of adaptation employed by the poet and to the features that distinguish her production from other literary rewritings derived from the same ethnographic corpus. Accordingly, the dissertation also considers, within its scope, the Afrikaans version Die sterre sê ‘Tsau’ (2004), as well as other orbiting texts. Within this study, translation is understood as a space for the ongoing establishment and negotiation of relations. According to Maurício Mendonça Cardozo (2009), translation may be conceived as a practice of weighing relations – whether between author and translator, among works, languages, or even between cultures. This perspective broadens the understanding of translation, placing it as a field of multicultural interactions, wherein translation simultaneously disrupts and transforms, presenting the other as a singular mode of existence – that is, as otherness. The dissertation is organised into three main parts: the first, presents historical, cultural, and cosmological aspects of the |xam people, while also contextualising the production, organisation, and reception of ethnographic sources; the second part sets out the main features of Antjie Krog's literary trajectory and offers a closer reading of The Stars Say ‘Tsau’, with particular emphasis on the poet’s motivations, editorial decisions, and poetic strategies; the third and final part – drawing on Mauricio Cardozo (2021), Jean-Luc Nancy (2013), Haroldo de Campos (2015), Matheus Barreto (2022), Michael Wessels (2010), and Roger Hewitt (2001) — presents an analytical discussion alongside a translated and commented version of the poem "the milky way and the stars" (2004b, p. 41). This section is followed by the translation of selected poems representative of recurring themes within this dissertation, including at least one poem attributed to each indigenous narrator. Particular attention is devoted to the narratives associated with !kweiten-ta-||ken, one of the few adult women interviewed within the |xam group
