Abstract: The present research aims to investigate the intellectual trajectory of Orlando DaSilva (1923-2012), Portuguese by origin and Brazilian at heart, by way of an analysis of his performance as an artist, teacher, and critic in favor of an education in art. His strategies as a teacher and his bibliographic production will be analyzed to reveal his educational views expressed in his thoughts and practice. His actions will be more deeply explored having in perspective his proximity to the capital of Paraná, which occurred in the late 1970s and lasted until the 1990s. His engagement with the field of art in Curitiba takes place through the insertion of teaching practice in projects of the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba and the publication of articles in periodicals in Paraná. For the understanding of the concept of the intellectual, a dialogue will be held with the author Carlos Eduardo Vieira's, who elaborates the concept of the intellectual as one who holds, in addition to an identity and a sense of mission, a belief in modernity and the leading role of the State. In order to allow a reflection on the trajectory of this intellectual and his formation, we will also make use of Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and field, seeking to understand the paths taken and revealed through his educational positioning. The teaching of art, specifically the language of engraving, is also addressed in the research, both in respect of the academic background of DaSilva and in his role as a teacher and producer of materials aimed at disseminating this language. Pallares-Burke's work will help to understand the newspaper as an educational source capable of disseminating ideas, concepts, and practices. To carry out the research, newspapers circulating in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Paraná between the 1950s and 1990s were used as sources, which are currently accessible through the Hemeroteca Digital and some also through microfilm, located in the section dedicated to the State of Parana in the Public Library of Parana. Books published by Orlando DaSilva, institutional documents preserved by the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba, and exhibition catalogs were also used. The research revealed DaSilva as an intellectual committed to promoting the language of engraving, either in the intellectual production or in the artistic actions in which he participated. It also highlighted the conflicts experienced by him between the artistic tradition and the opening to new contemporary possibilities of art.
