Palavra e imagem no livro Onde vivem os monstros, de Maurice Sendak

Abstract

Resumo: A presente pesquisa busca discutir os processos de comunicação que se estabelecem no livro infantil de Maurice Sendak, Onde vivem os monstros (Cosac Naify, 2009). Pretende-se identificar como as ilustrações, por intermédio da expansão que realizam, interferem sobre a diagramação, materialidade do livro e em seu layout, propondo uma discussão não apenas do artefato em si mas também do que configura o livro ilustrado contemporâneo. No movimento que executam dentro do livro, palavras e imagens produzem novos sentidos e possibilidades de leitura. Dentre essas possibilidades, há, ao mesmo tempo, uma interação e conflito entre civilidade versus selvageria, presentes no espaço ficcional protagonizado no livro pelo menino Max. No embate interno em que vive o personagem, verificamos a atração pelo selvagem, como um escape da comunicação verbal, posta aqui como forma de domesticação e espaço de poder da mãe. Junto da expressão do selvagem, que demarca o espaço onírico e imaginário da aventura do menino, há uma jornada do "eu" assim como a fuga para dentro desse espaço subjetivo, necessário para lidar com seus sentimentos intensos de ira e voracidade. Nesse local mágico, edificado na evolução das ilustrações do livro, encontramos as expressões mais intensas das emoções do personagem, expressas não apenas em sua ferocidade mas também moldados nas figuras dos monstros que habitam esse lugar. Unida a todas essas expressões, a obra dialoga com o próprio pacto ficcional, mostrando-se como um espaço/objeto que questiona o papel da linguagem verbal e visual na edificação da imaginação. O livro encena a entrada do leitor na obra literária e propõe um debate metalinguístico, tanto na forma que o protagonista adentra seu ambiente inventado, quanto na maneira que Max mergulha cada vez nas imagens que se expandem, justamente, para lhe dar passagem, para que junto do protagonista o leitor também adentre o lugar onde vivem os monstros. Abstract: The present research intends to discuss the communication processes that are established in Maurice Sendak's children's book Onde Vivem os Monstros (Cosac Naify, 2009). It is intended to identify how the illustrations, through the expansion which they perform, interfere with the design, the materiality of the book and its layout, offering a discussion not only of the book itself but also of the constitution of contemporary illustrated literature. In the movement they perform within the book, words and images produce new meanings and reading possibilities. Among them, there is interaction and conflict between civility versus savage, present in the fictional space protagonized by Max. In the character's internal conflict we see the attraction of the wild side as an escape from verbal communication, shown as a form of domestication and use of power by the mother. Along with the expression of the savage, which demarcates the dreamlike and imaginary space of the boy's adventure, there is a journey of the "self" as well as the escape into that subjective space necessary to deal with his intense feelings of anger and voracity. In this magical place, built through evolution of the illustrations in the book, we find the most intense expressions of the character's emotions, expressed not only in their ferocity but also shaped as the figures of the monsters that inhabit that place. Using all these expressions, the book deals with the fictional pact itself, becoming a space/object which questions the function of verbal and visual language in the imagination. The book allows the reader to enter the literary work and proposes a metalinguistic debate when the protagonist enters his invented environment, and in the way Max dives more and more into the expanding of the images, so that the reader might go with him to the place where the monsters live.
