Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese dedica-se ao estudo da escrita experimental de ValêncioXavier, com foco no livro Crimes à moda antiga: contos verdade (2004), bemcomo à presença recorrente dos temas "crime" e "morte" emsua obracomoum todo. A pesquisa tem como objetivo examinar a singularidade desuacomposição, marcada pela transposição de fragmentos oriundos de diversasmídias — sobretudo, de jornais — e pela construção de sentidos por meiodesua montagem na narrativa, interligando o texto verbal e o imagético. Aanálisetambém explora a dimensão crítica na obra, ao evidenciar como oautor problematiza a forma com que os meios de comunicação da primeira metadedo século XX espetacularizaram casos criminais, principalmente, por meiodeestratégias sensacionalistas. Além disso, busca-se compreender comoaobrade Valêncio Xavier antecipa e contribui para a formação do subgênerotruecrime no Brasil, situando o escritor como uma figura pioneira na incorporaçãode elementos documentais, ficcionais e visuais para a elaboração de narrativascriminais que desafiam os limites entre realidade e invenção, ao mesmotempoque provocam uma reflexão a respeito do modo como a sociedade representa— e consome — a violência

Abstract: This thesis is dedicated to the study of Valêncio Xavier's experimental writing, with a focus on his book Crimes à moda antiga: contos verdade(2004), as well as the recurring presence of the themes of "crime" and "death" throughout his body of work. The research aims to examine the distinctivenessof its composition, characterized by the transposition of fragments fromvariousmedia — primarily newspapers — and the construction of the narrative meaningthrough the interplay between text and image. The analysis also exploresthecritical dimension of the book, highlighting how the author interrogates thewaysin which the media of the early 20th century sensationalized criminal cases. Furthermore, it seeks to understand how this book anticipates and contributesto the development of the true crime subgenre in Brazil, positioning ValêncioXavier as a pioneering figure in incorporating documentary, fictional, andvisual elements in the crafting of criminal narratives that blur the boundaries betweenreality and invention, while simultaneously prompting reflection on howsocietyrepresents — and consumes — violence
