Abstract: The present doctoral research has as subject a group of egressed students of popular university preparatory coursesfrom the city Curitiba, PR, who enrolled in licensing courses at public universities of the same city and participate in popular initiatives as teachers and in other functions through volunteer work. The goal was analyzing the way this group constructs their identity as teachers using the experience from these two socializing spaces: university preparatory courses and the university. The research comprehends the process of academic formation as continuous and unfinished, which does not begin or end in the systematized formation of the university, seeing that all who are in the teaching academic formation process have been students and have a constructed judgment about what it means to be a teacher. The relation between the mentioned spaces will be made through the concept of socialization, defined as a process of internalizing the objective social reality by the constructed social relationships. The in-depth discussion about socialization will be grounded in the studies of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, who understands socialization as a sociological notion resulting from the incorporation of the agents’ habitus during their social trajectory. Habitus refers to a notion which enables the understanding of socialization, considering that, in addition to incorporating capacities from objective social structures, it transforms into subjectivity mediated by the position agents occupy in the social order, in sight of the distribution of different types of capital: economic, cultural, social and symbolic. Therefore, the research sought to analyze through the habitus of the investigated group the way in which they became teachers. This analysis is based on qualitative research methodology, specifically a case study type, and the presented data were collected by the application of a survey and by 20 semi-structured interviews with seven interviewed participants. The research findings reinforced those from previous investigations, indicating that opting for teaching as a profession is associated with a less privileged class condition. Furthermore, they demonstrate more prominently the calling for a teaching career and the influence of former educators on enrollment in licensing courses, particularly succeeding the participation and close interaction with teachers in popular university preparatory courses. Lastly, involvement in these popular courses became essential for shaping the group’s identities as teachers through the experience in the course, through the comparison with teachers from their schools and by the reinforcement of the acquired knowledge from the courses with university professors.
