Os vernizes da verdade : mapeamentos da ironia na obra ficcional de David Foster Wallace

Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese tem como objetivo central retraçar os percursos dos usos da ironia no decorrer de toda a obra ficcional do autor norte-americano David Foster Wallace. Ou seja, um estudo que busque analisar, em ordem cronológica de publicação, todas as obras de caráter ficcional do autor – de seu primeiro romance The Broom of the System ao romance póstumo O Rei Pálido, portanto –, com ênfase nas manifestações da ironia, criando assim um panorama amplo e minucioso de como, de fato, esse elemento linguístico é empregado na ficção de Wallace. Trata-se de uma pesquisa que surge para atender uma demanda constante na crítica literária sobre o autor: compreender quais são as formas que a relação entre Wallace e a ironia assumiu no decorrer de sua obra. Para isso, esta tese se divide em três momentos principais: no primeiro, tentaremos demonstrar o que, de fato, o próprio Wallace disse sobre a ironia, para em seguida compreendemos como isso foi lido pela crítica no decorrer das décadas, qual o discurso que se formou ao redor da ironia e quais os problemas que acabaram surgindo da repercussão desse discurso; no segundo momento, apresentaremos os autores que servirão como fundamentação teórica, ou seja, com quais teorias dialogaremos no decorrer de nossa análise, entre as que se classificam como teorias acerca da ironia, da teoria literária e da filosofia da linguagem; o último momento, e o mais extenso, é quando realizaremos o estudo em si, indo de obra a obra e levantando dados que nos permitam demonstrar as diferentes funções que a ironia assumiu. Esses dados serão estudados à luz dos autores contextualizados em nossa fundamentação e contrapostos ao discurso pré-existente sobre a ironia na obra de Wallace, verificando assim quão sustentável ele realmente é atualmente e quais novas leituras são possíveis.

Abstract: This thesis has as its main objective to retrace the routes of irony through the fictional works of the North American author David Foster Wallace. By that we mean a study that aims to analyze, in chronological order of publishing, all the author’s works of a fictional nature – from his first novel The Broom of the System to his posthumous novel The Pale King –, with an emphasis on the manifestations of irony, creating an ample and detailed view of how, actually, this linguistic element is used in Wallace’s fiction. It is a research that arises to fulfill a constant demand in the critical reception of the author: to understand what are the ways in which the relation between Wallace and irony manifested through his body of work. To this effect, this thesis is divided in three different moments: in the first one, we’ll try to demonstrate what, in fact, Wallace actually said about irony, to then show how this was read by the critics in the decades following the publication of his first novel, how a discourse surrounding irony took shape and what are the problems that ended up being born of this repercussion; in the second moment, we’ll present the authors that will serve as theorical foundation, basically what are the theories that will converse with our analysis, being divided between theories about irony, literary theory and language philosophy; the last, and largest, moment is when we’ll execute the study itself, going from work to work and collecting data that will allow us to demonstrate the different functions assumed by irony. This data will be studied considering the authors contextualized in the second chapter, and will also be put up against the pre-existing discourse about irony in Wallace’s works to verify how sustainable it actually is and what are the new readings that become possible.
