Bob Kaufman : my negro suit has jew stripes
Abstract: This dissertation deals with the work of the beat poet Bob Kaufman (1925-1983), born in New Orleans, USA. Member of the Beat movement since its early years, Kaufman, unlike his contemporaries, is a poet who has received little attention from critics and the public. Much of this, point out some of the few critics of the poet, derived from the fact that Kaufman was black, in addition to having entered a period of silence that lasted from 1963 to 1973. In addition to his African-American ascent, Kaufman also descended from Jews from Germany and, as I demonstrate in the dissertation, he articulated these ancestries in his poems. These articulation complicate identity issues and are generally not recognized by critics. Thus, I propose in this work to demonstrate how I perceive the identity articulation in Kaufman's work, focusing on those of a Jewish origin, problematizing the reception readings found so far, with the aim of providing another text about the poet.
