Abstract: The objective of the study was to understand the hypocrisy of the consumer in the relationship with brands. This hypocrisy was investigated by the judgment of third parties, who analyzed in the first experiment whether certain consumer actions in everyday life, which go against the purposes of the brands they consume, would be consumer hypocrisy (H1). In a second experiment, we sought to evaluate H1 again and identify if consumers more engaged with brands are judged more hypocritical (H2). It was checked too a desire for punishment of consumer hypocrisy by third parties (H3) and the mediation of condemnation of hypocrisy, through the gravity of the action (H4) and the immorality of the behavior (H5). Finally, we examined how people who are more aligned with a cause have a more severe condemnation of hypocrisy (H6). The results showed that the consumer is judged as a hypocrite when he acts against the brand's purposes and there is a desire to punish this hypocrisy by third parties, explained by the condemnation of hypocrisy (gravity of the action and immorality of the behavior). Furthermore, people more aligned with the cause are more severe in condemning the hypocritical consumer. Finally, the study did not show a difference in the judgment of hypocrisy between people with low and high brand engagement. The study is original in understanding consumer hypocrisy in their relationship with brands.
