Texto e imagem : a ilustração literária de Poty Lazzarotto

Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese tem como objeto as relações entre o texto literário e as ilustrações do artista paranaense Napoleon Potyguara Lazzarotto (1924-1998), conhecido como Poty, para obras de ficção em prosa. O embasamento teórico deste estudo foi construído a partir de uma recuperação de aspectos da reflexão acerca das relações entre literatura e artes visuais na Antiguidade Clássica e no Renascimento e da discussão subsequente do tema à luz de teorias contemporâneas, com destaque para o conceito de imagem segundo W. J. T. Mitchell (Iconology), a teoria do efeito estético de Wolfgang Iser (O ato da leitura) e a compreensão da atividade artística como "produção de mundos", do filósofo estadunidense Nelson Goodman. Abordando, a partir de Goodman, a ilustração como uma nova "versão de mundo" em relação à criação literária, as imagens criadas por Poty foram analisadas a partir de categorias ligadas aos Estudos Literários. A metodologia empregada nesta pesquisa consiste basicamente no cotejamento entre as imagens e o texto, buscando encontrar os elementos escolhidos como tema para as ilustrações e descrever como o ilustrador representa visualmente estes elementos, fornecendo assim uma determinada interpretação da narrativa ficcional - colaborando com, selecionando, incrementando ou mesmo alterando os sentidos presentes em cada obra literária específica. O estudo é organizado a partir dos diferentes elementos literários privilegiados nas ilustrações, conceitos estes que presidiram a seleção das diferentes obras estudadas, criando assim quatro percursos de leitura. Primeiramente, são abordados os livros em que as ilustrações são dedicadas à representação da narrativa, do movimento e da ação, criando estreitas ligações com o enredo. Em segundo lugar, são analisadas as ilustrações dedicadas à figuração dos personagens, ora destacando aspectos da sua vida social, ora revelando suas dimensões subjetivas. Em terceiro lugar, em analogia com o ponto de vista narrativo, são abordadas as ilustrações que operam com deslocamentos e alterações dos pontos de vista nas imagens, criando diferentes "formas de visão", formal e estilisticamente caracterizadas. Finalmente, são analisadas as ilustrações que efetuam operações semânticas de ordem metonímica e metafórica, gerando imagens que criam ressonâncias alegóricas ou emblemáticas com a matéria narrada. A partir destes percursos de leitura, esta pesquisa busca demonstrar as diferentes formas como as ilustrações de Poty Lazzarotto interagem e dialogam com as obras literárias. Abstract: This thesis approaches the relationships between literary text and the illustrations for fiction works in prose by the brazilian artist Napoleon Potyguara Lazzarotto, commonly known as Poty. The theoretical ground for this research was based on a recollection of certain aspects of reflections on the relationship between literature and visual arts during Classical Antiquity and the Renaissance and subsequent discussion of these themes in the light of contemporary theories, with particular reference to the concept of image according to W. J. T. Mitchell (Iconology), the theory of aesthetic response from Wolfgang Iser (The act of reading) and the understanding of the artistic activity as "ways of making worlds", from the North American philosopher Nelson Goodman. Approaching, through Goodman's ideas, the illustration as a new "version of world" in relation to the literary creation, the images created by Poty were analyzed through categories connected to Literary Studies. The methodology applied in this research consists, basically, in the comparison of the images and the text, pursuing the elements chosen as themes for the illustrations and describing how the illustrator visually represents such elements, therefore providing an interpretation of fictional narratives ? collaborating with, selecting, enhancing or even changing the meanings carried by each specific literary work. The research is organized from the standpoint of the different literary elements highlighted in the illustrations, concepts that determined the selection of the literary works studied, which lead us along four reading pathways. Firstly we approach the books in which the illustrations are dedicated to the representation of narrative, movement and action, with strict links to the plot. In second place, we analyze the illustrations dedicated to the representation of characters, either highlighting aspects of their social lives or revealing their subjective dimensions. In third place, in analogy to the narrative point of view, we approach the illustrations that operate through displacements and alterations of the points of view in the images, creating various "forms of vision" that are formally and stylistically characterized. Finally, we analyze the illustrations that perform semantic operations of metonymic and metaphoric nature, generating images that create allegoric or emblematic resonances with the narrated matter. Through these reading pathways, this research attempts to demonstrate the different manners in which the illustrations by Poty Lazzarotto interact and establish dialogue with literary works.
