Choosing a psittacine as a pet involves understanding its needs, behavior, and the long-term commitment these birds require. As intelligent and social animals, they need proper management to live healthy and balanced lives in a domestic environment. This is the theme of the eighth episode of the Psitaflix series, a set of educational videos produced by the extension project "Knowing, Respecting and Producing Birds: Didactic and Alternative Models in the Teaching and Learning Process," developed by undergraduate, graduate, and faculty students from the Laboratory for the Breeding and Incubation of Wild and Exotic Animals (LACRIAS) at the Federal University of Paraná. The video explains that psittacines can be excellent companions because they are sociable, affectionate, and capable of learning tricks and vocalizations, creating deep bonds with their owners. However, it emphasizes that they are animals that demand time, patience, and daily interaction, as they can develop stress and undesirable behaviors when confined without stimulation. Before choosing a bird, it's essential to consider factors such as temperament, size, life expectancy, available space, and the species' specific needs, as well as its compatibility with other animals in the house. It's also very important to respect the law, acquiring birds only from legal breeders and avoiding any connection to wildlife trafficking. At home, you should have a spacious, well-located enclosure with good natural lighting, ventilation, and protection against excessive noise to avoid stressing the bird. Environmental enrichment is fundamental to maintaining the physical and mental health of these animals, along with a varied and balanced diet, proper hygiene, and regular veterinary check-ups. When cared for responsibly, with dedication and affection, psittacines become cheerful, healthy, and present companions for many years in the lives of their owners.
