For the breeding of psittacines, understanding the concept of animal health, which is the practice of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease, is fundamental for safe breeding and a good quality of life for the bird. The breeder's role is limited to prevention, as diagnosis and treatment are solely the responsibility of a veterinarian. Therefore, understanding how to prevent diseases was the objective of the third episode of the Psitaflix series, a set of videos produced by the extension project "Knowing, Respecting and Producing Birds: Didactic and Alternative Models in the Teaching and Learning Process," developed by undergraduate, graduate, and faculty students from the Laboratory for Breeding and Incubation of Wild and Exotic Animals (LACRIAS) at the Federal University of Paraná. For better understanding, the episode separated and explained in detail 7 essential steps for the health of these birds: (1) Acquire your bird from a legal breeder; (2) Regularly consult a veterinarian specializing in exotic and wild birds; (3) Provide food appropriate to the species and life stage of the animal; (4) Observe for signs of disease; (5) Hygiene and sanitary management; (6) Provide environmental enrichment; (7) Isolate new animals. Following these seven steps ensures a bird with a long and healthy life.
