Abstract

The domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) is the most widely used bird for meat and egg production. Understanding the digestive process of these animals is extremely important for achieving production efficiency. The objective of this work was to anatomically present the beginning of the chicken's digestive system. To this end, the authors produced three models of the morphology and topography of the following anatomical structures or regions: (a) Rhamphotheca or Beak (rhinotheca and gnathotheca); (b) Oropharyngeal cavity highlighting the choana, glottis, palatine crest, among other structures; (c) Bones of the skull and face, with emphasis on the bones responsible for the opening and closing movement of the beak (ventral view). This work was developed by students of the Comparative Anatomy of Domestic Animals (BA066) course of the Animal Science program, linked to the extension project "Knowing, respecting and producing birds: didactic and alternative model in the teaching-learning process" of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR).
