    Abstract

Abstract: The buffalo breeding is growing in the brazilian livestock industry in recent years. The determination of the occurrence of infectious diseases in commercial herds is of capital importance for the evaluation of susceptible and infected animals. This study aimed to determine the main risk factors associated with the seroprevalence of BoHV-1, BVDV and Neospora caninum in unvaccinated buffaloes raised in the Parana State, using the virus neutralization (VN) technique and indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFAT). A total of 377 serum samples of blood from buffaloes, males and females aged between 18 and 24 months of life, were collected from 22 herds, distributed in 16 cities of Parana belonging to six mesoregions (Southeast, North Central, North Pioneiro, Center South, Center East and Curitiba). Concomitantly to the harvest, an epidemiological questionnaire was applied in each evaluated farm, to determine the risk factors associated with the agents in question. The prevalences were 72.7% (274/377) for BoHV-1, 18.6% (70/377) for BVDV and 35.3% (133/377) for N. caninum. Considering the risk factors for BoHV-1, it was found that animals owned by renting pastures (OR = 1.88; CI 1.03–3.67), common pastures on other properties (OR = 0.57; CI 0.34–0.97), presence of other species (OR = 7.97; CI 1.74–61.04), mixed rearing of sheep (OR = 1.79; CI 1.06-3, 12), cattle (OR = 1.58; CI 1.00–2.50) and buffaloes with reproductive problems (OR = 2.68; 1.60–4.65) were more likely to be positive. Regarding the BVDV, the risk factors for pasture rent (OR = 0.45; CI 0.19–0.94) and history of reproductive problems (OR = 0.30; CI 0.15–0.57) were identified. Properties with the presence of other species (p = 0.035) and with reproductive problems (OR = 0.61; CI 0.38–0.95) were more likely to be positive for N. caninum. From the observation of the agents seroprevalence and the determination of the main risk factors, mitigating actions for prevention and control can be adopted in order to avoid losses to the buffalo breeding in Parana state
