This brochure was created by academics and faculty from the Animal Science Program at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) who are part of the Extension Project "Knowing, Respecting, and Producing Farm Animals: Alternative Teaching Models in the Teaching-Learning Process." It provides basic information on the muscle architecture of domestic animals. Illustrative diagrams with captions demonstrate muscle architecture (microscopic and macroscopic) and discuss muscle classifications based on the following criteria: fiber orientation (parallel, flat, fusiform, digastric, circular, and pennate); topographic (superficial and deep); and functional (voluntary and involuntary).
