Abstract: This research intends to analyze and comprehend the concept of imitation of belle nature in Batteux’ The fine arts reduced to a single principle. This single principle, identified by its author with the imitation of belle nature, initially suggests that all the fine arts must have a property that binds them together as a group, and such property is a type of mimesis. However, Batteux’ mimesis turns out not to be as simple as the title of his treatise might suggest. Several difficulties arise as its study advances. The first one is the range of meanings attributed to the concepts involved. The terms "nature" and "poetry", for example, must be understood in a broad sense and other terms have changing meanings, similarly to what happened historically to the terms "art" (techne, ars) and "imitation" (mimesis, imitatio), which had in ancient times different meanings. Furthermore, the idea of belle nature is problematic due to its complexity and lack of a complete definition – an abstraction that certainly cannot be grasped by a couple of examples. Largely due to these difficulties Batteux has often been misinterpreted – notably in the 19th and 20th centuries. Through a historical comparison with contemporary and ancient thinkers who were decisively influential on Batteux’ thought, this research encounters links which can help us understand better an idea which is a lantern in the eighteenth-century aesthetics.
