Accuracy of Terahertz spectroscopy in the diagnosis of Covid-19 by analysis of volatile organic compounds in the breath : Acurácia da espectroscopia Terahertz no diagnóstico de Covid-19 pela análise de compostos orgânicos voláteis na respiração
Abstract: Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is an emerging technology that is bringing a series of technical advances in several scientific applications in biochemistry. This study presents the platform as a diagnostic alternative in the control of diseases in public health. Threats to public health, such as the current pandemic, require immediate action by authorities and, in this sense, rapid non-invasive diagnostic methods and can be used as a tool to control the spread of diseases. The present work evaluated a commercial breath analysis test for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for the detection of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 by THz associated with an algorithm. By conducting clinical research, submitted, and approved by the National Committee for Ethics in Clinical Research (CONEP), 500 samples from healthy people and 70 samples from infected people, previously tested by RT- qPCR, were analyzed. The test showed a sensitivity of 92.6% and a specificity of 96.0%. The results also showed no correlation between SARS-CoV-2 positivity and infection by other respiratory diseases investigated in the study. It is concluded that the method can be used as a rapid, local and easy-to-apply diagnostic screening test for Covid-19.
