Abstract: Starting from the question about the management of dreams in clinical practice, the main objective of this dissertation research was to understand the theory erected by Freud in relation to dream work. The initial investigation on the state of the art of the subject in the electronic databases SciELO and Google academic, as well as in the depository of theses and dissertations of Brazilian Postgraduate programs, demonstrated the scarce number of publications and scientific works on dreams. Unexpectedly, throughout our study, we were surprised by the Covid-19 pandemic and with it the resumption of academic interest in dreams and the function of dreaming. Including our research in this context, adopting a chronological sequence of Freudian texts, the first chapter of the dissertation was configured from Freudian writings published between 1893 and 1895, highlighting three topics of analysis: hypnosis, the division of consciousness and the energy distribution. In our perspective, these vectors led Freud to a metapsychological perspective centered on certain aspects: the hypothesis about the existence of unconscious psychic processes; the recognition of resistance and repression; and the value of childhood sexuality. In the second chapter, the objective was to understand how Freud starts from the theory of dream work to build a model of the psychic apparatus, within the limits of his first topic. Understanding that the study of dreams showed the author how the psyche works, an analysis was made of the way in which Freud passes from the theoretical model of the psychic apparatus constructed in his Project For a Scientific Psychology (1950[1895]/1996 ) to the one presented in chapter seven of The interpretation of dreams (1900/1996), highlighting its metapsychological indices, that is, its topical, economic and dynamic dimensions. Subsequently, the third chapter sought to establish the relationship between the dream work and the formulations about the psychic apparatus, through the analysis of the last two chapters of The Interpretation of Dreams, highlighting the close relationship and interdependence of the metapsychological indices. This theoretical path allowed us to conclude that it is possible to propose that the theory created by Freud in relation to the dream work constituted the royal road that led him to the construction of the notion of metapsychology which underlies the main concepts of his first topic: the unconscious, the drive and repression.
