Abstract: Metal-organic structures are a relatively new and promising area of research, mainly due to their optical properties, which allow applications as sensors and luminescent probes, shown sensing to pH, temperature, detection of analytes and solvents, to cite some relevant examples. These hybrid structures, composed by an organic moiety associated with metals, have been extensively studied with lanthanide ions, due to their unique optical properties. This work reports the synthesis, characterization and solvent effect on the luminescence of three systems composed by a polymer backbone and its derivative complexed with a lanthanide ion in the t-pyridine sites: 1) poly[(9,9’- dihexylfluoren-2,7-diyl)-6,6"-(2,2’:6’,2"–terpyridine)], (LaPPS75), and its complexes with terbium ions (LaPPS75–Tb) and with europium (LaPPS75–Eu(Q)). The third system was composed by poly[(9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)-1,2-ethenediyl-4,4'- bipyridine-1,2-ethenediyl], (LaPPS34) and its complex with terbium (LaPPS34–Tb). In these materials, the emission of lanthanide ions is sensitive to the chemical environment and its luminescence occurs in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and/or N,Ndimethylformamide (DMF) only, while quenching in all other tested solvents. The results obtained were accounted for the high viscosity and polarity of the medium that favored the luminescence of the lanthanide ions through aggregation-induced emission (AIE). This effect in turn was brought about by restriction of intramolecular motion of the polymer main chain, and conformational changes involving the pyridine units.
