Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to discuss the relationship between present and past considering the study of panathenaic amphorae and other panathenaic pottery exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Fifteen objects dated from 575 to 359 BC are studied, mostly coming from the games of the Panathenaea Festival, a civic and religious event that took place in Athens in honor of the polyad goddess, and whose athletic competitions won amphorae containing the sacred olive oil from the olive trees of Athena. This material culture is the basis to discuss the ancient world, social imaginary around the iconography, and the athlete ideal. In addition, I also discuss how identity is formed in contemporaneity through the National Archaeologial Museum exhibition. To this end, an interdisciplinary approach between History, Archeology and Visual Studies is adopted, inserting an interpretative historical point of view of artifact investigation in a contextualist perspective of image interpretation. Keywords: Greek Vases. Panathenaea Festival. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
