O professor como personagem e a escola como cenário : escola e sociedade em filmes Norte-Americanos (1955-1974)

Abstract

Resumo: O presente trabalho- tem origem na análise crítica de uma seleção de quatro filmes norte americanos produzidos nas décadas de 1950 e 1970. Os filmes representam histórias de professores e de seu relacionamento com os estudantes e o ambiente de trabalho. A hipótese é a de que tais escolas fictícias, influenciadas pelos influxos históricos e culturais, pelos valores ideológicos e as determinações do currículo em cada período, possam ser vistas como pequenas réplicas ou microcosmos do American Way of Life. Por meio de analogias, os espectadores podem observar as mudanças dos valores que transformaram a sociedade Norte Americana desde a "era Eisenhower" (anos 50) até a "era Nixon" (anos 70). A despeito de todas as mudanças, alguns valores fundantes como o individualismo e o mito da democracia, parecem aplicar-se a um modelo mais ou menos constante nas representações dos professores no cinema.

Abstract: The present work originated from a critical analysis of a selection of four North American motion pictures released between the 1950s and 1970s. The movies depicted tales from teachers and their relationships with students and with the work environment. The author hypothesis that these fictional schools, influenced by historic and cultural influxes, ideological influxes, ideological values, and the curriculum determinations of each time period, could serve as smaller replicas of the American Way of Life. Through this analogy, viewers could contemplate the North american society since the "Eisenhower era"(50s) until the "Nixon era"(earlier 70s). In spite of all this changes, some well-established values like the individualism and the democratic myth, seem to attend to an archetype more or less constant in the representations of the teachers in the movies.
