Abstract: The present work is an intervention project of the Mais Médicos Program, prepared by the team of the Basic Health Unit Louis Buron, in the city of Ponta Grossa, Paraná. The methodology used was action research. The work was carried out with insulin- dependent diabetic patients registered in the Hiperdia group of the UBS, excluding residents of other regions. A database of these patients was built, with personal information and values of laboratory tests (glycated glycemia). The patient underwent an orientation plan, in which consultations were made with the doctor and the nurse and guidance through pamphlets aimed at promoting changes in harmful habits, such as inadequate diet and lack of physical activity. The intervention aimed to stimulate adherence to medication and non-medication treatment to control Diabetes Mellitus in insulin-dependent patients. The sample of this study was 22 patients, 81.8% of whom had improved glycemic values after the intervention, and the health education strategy promoting changes in habits proved to be an important factor in the treatment of the disease. However, it is understood that for the treatment to be effective, it is necessary that this change be permanent and that the patient understands the real need to maintain healthy lifestyle habits on a daily basis. It was also possible to conclude that the role of health professionals in the development of health education actions, both in home visits and in support groups, is fundamental for identifying the individual needs of patients and families, as well as for the proper monitoring of the treatment and, consequently, disease control and acquisition of quality of life.
