A trajetória de Athénaïs Michelet : tensões e desafios como escritora na França, século XIX

Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese investiga a trajetória de Athénaïs Michelet (1826-1899), escritora e colaboradora de Jules Michelet (1798-1874) em uma série de livros de História Natural, bem como sua atuação intelectual em um contexto em que as mulheres raramente eram reconhecidas como autoras. Conhecida principalmente como a segunda esposa e editora das obras póstumas do historiador, sua própria produção escrita permanece pouco explorada. A análise de sua colaboração na série de livros de História Natural, bem como de suas obras autorais Mémoires d’une Enfant (1867) e Nature; or, the Poetry of the Earth and the Sea (1872), revela sua significativa contribuição intelectual e, principalmente, suas estratégias para se inserir em redes de sociabilidade literária e científica. Apesar do sucesso da série de livros de História Natural escritas em conjunto com Jules Michelet, e suas próprias obras, a autoria de Athénaïs foi frequentemente invisibilizada, reflexo das dinâmicas de gênero no século XIX, que persistem até hoje. A tese examina a colaboração intelectual do casal, e a atuação autoral de Athénaïs, com base em diversas fontes documentais, dando especial atenção à escrita de foro íntimo: os diários e as correspondências. Entre estes documentos, inúmeros manuscritos foram examinados durante o estágio de doutorado-sanduíche em Paris, onde foram encontradas correspondências inéditas de Athénaïs, que contribuíram significativamente para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa. Esta tese discute como a trajetória de Athénaïs ilustra os desafios enfrentados por mulheres intelectuais da época, que muitas vezes tiveram suas contribuições eclipsadas em prol da imagem do "homem de gênio"

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the trajectory of Athénaïs Michelet (1826–1899), a writer and collaborator of Jules Michelet (1798–1874) on a series of Natural History books, as well as her intellectual engagement within a context in which women were rarely recognized as authors. Although she is primarily known as the historian’s second wife and the editor of his posthumous works, her own literary production remains largely unexplored. The analysis of her collaboration on the Natural History series, along with her authored works Mémoires d’une Enfant (1867) and Nature; or, the Poetry of the Earth and the Sea (1872), reveals her significant intellectual contributions and, above all, the strategies she employed to participate in literary and scientific networks of sociability. Despite the success of the Natural History series co-written with Jules Michelet and the merit of her own works, Athénaïs’s authorship was frequently rendered invisible—a reflection of 19th-century gender dynamics that still resonate today. This dissertation examines the couple’s intellectual collaboration and Athénaïs’s authorial agency through a variety of documentary sources, with particular attention to personal writings such as diaries and correspondence. Among these sources, numerous manuscripts were examined during a research stay in Paris as part of a doctoral exchange program, where previously unpublished letters written by Athénaïs were discovered, significantly contributing to the development of this study. This research discusses how Athénaïs’s life and work illustrate the challenges faced by intellectual women of the period, whose contributions were often overshadowed in favor of the image of the "man of genius."
