Técnicas de aprendizado de máquinas aplicadas às cartas e obras de Vincent Van Gogh

Abstract

Resumo: As obras de Vincent van Gogh, pintor pós-impressionista, contribuíram para as fundações da arte moderna. Paralelamente a tais obras o pintor trocava cartas regularmente com seu irmão, compartilhando sobre seu dia a dia, sentimentos, reflexões e questionamentos. A literatura supõe que van Gogh sofria de alguns transtornos mentais, podendo ser bipolaridade, depressão ou esquizofrenia. Tendo isso em vista, neste projeto serão aplicadas técnicas e modelos de aprendizagem de máquina visando extrair informações e características das cartas e obras buscando possíveis relações entre os dois meios de produção do artista. De forma mais específica, pode-se segmentar o trabalho em quatro objetivos principais: aplicar algoritmos associados a análise de sentimento, sendo modelos pré treinados e não supervisionados, para entender as polaridades das cartas de Vincent van Gogh no decorrer do tempo; aplicar o modelo Mentallama na busca da identificação de possíveis sintomas associados a depressão e outros transtornos também em suas cartas; utilizar da extração de algumas características das obras de van Gogh e análise de possíveis similaridades entre as mesmas; buscar associações entre resultados obtidos com cartas e obras para entender se poderia existir algum tipo de influência entre seus sentimentos expressos em forma de texto nos compartilhamentos de suas cartas e o que era expresso em suas pinturas nos mesmos períodos. Com a conclusão do trabalho, na avaliação exclusivamente das cartas, notou-se melhores resultados com os modelos de análise de sentimento que avaliavam apenas positividade e negatividade, conseguindo destacar pontos mais específicos da carreira do pintor. Já com o cruzamento de cartas e obras, foi observado que obras associadas aos meses com mais percentual de negatividade tendem a ter tons mais escuros. De modo geral, após tantas análises, é possível inferir que a produção de pinturas de van Gogh não era diretamente influenciada pelo seu estado emocional.

Abstract: The paints of Vincent van Gogh, a post-impressionist painter, contributed to the foundations of modern art. Parallel to these works, the painter regularly exchanged letters with his brother, sharing about his daily life, feelings, reflections and questions. The literature assumes that van Gogh suffered from some mental disorders, which could be bipolar, depression or schizophrenia. With this in mind, in this project will be applied machine learning techniques and models to extract information and characteristics from letters and paintings, seeking possible relationships between the artist’s two means of production. More specifically, the work can be segmented into four main objectives: apply algorithms associated with sentiment analysis, specialy pre-trained and unsupervised models, to understand the polarities of Vincent van Gogh’s letters over time; apply the Mentallama model in the search for identifying possible symptoms associated with depression and other disorders in your letters; use the extraction of some characteristics of van Gogh’s works and analysis of possible similarities between them; seek associations between results obtained with letters and works to understand whether there could be any type of influence between his expressed feelings in text form on his letters and what was expressed in his paintings in the same periods. With the conclusion of the work, when evaluating exclusively the letters, better results were noted with the sentiment analysis models that evaluated only positivity and negativity, managing to highlight more specific points in the painter’s career. When crossing letters and paintings, it was observed that works associated with months with a higher percentage of negativity tend to have darker tones. In general, after so many analyses, it is possible to infer that van Gogh’s paintings production was not directly influenced by his emotional state.
