Abstract: Industrial growth demands the development of new materials and/or new treatments. In this context, new treatments make it possible to adapt existing materials to new applications and/or new operating conditions. In this sense, considering stainless steels, the application of thermochemical treatments assisted by plasma at low temperature has been presented as an interesting alternative, improving the surface performance of these materials. These treatments aim to diffuse nitrogen and/or carbon into the material without precipitation of nitrides or chromium carbides, which is obtained for sufficiently low temperatures and sufficiently short treatment times, ensuring that the treatment occurs in paraequilibrium. For this treatment condition, the tribological behavior, and also the corrosion resistance, of these materials can be improved. Among stainless steels, duplex or super-duplex steels combine properties of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, resulting in a material with excellent mechanical properties and high resistance to corrosion. Despite this, the low wear resistance makes these materials unattractive for some applications. Thus, plasma-assisted thermochemical treatments are alternatives to overcome this limitation, but many knowledge gaps still need to be filled in this area. Considering the few studies on carburizing with super-duplex stainless steel, this thesis proposes the study of low-temperature plasma-assisted carburizing of super duplex steel UNS S32750. Initially, the kinetics of formation and growth of the treated layer is the focus of study. The performance of treated surfaces in corrosion and microabrasive wear is also studied. The samples were subjected to low temperature carburizing treatment for temperatures between 300 ºC and 500 °C, with a fixed time of 12h and for a fixed temperature of 400 ºC for treatment times of 2, 4, 8 and 12h. The kinetics of layer formation and growth were studied by microstructural analysis, using microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The hardness of the treated surface was measured by nanoindentation. The electrochemical techniques used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the carburized surface were open circuit potential and cyclic polarization measurements. Finally, wear resistance was evaluated by rotating sphere microabrasion tests. The results of the microstructural and mechanical characterization show that the application of low-temperature plasma nitriding treatment promotes the formation of a treated layer composed of carbon-expanded austenite. For short periods and low temperatures, the layer formed is continuous and the thickness increases with increasing temperature and carburizing time. The treated layer formed on the ferrite grains is thinner than that formed on the austenite grains. The calculated activation energy values for nitrogen diffusion were 92.95 and 98.60 kJmol-1, for the layer formed on austenitic and ferritic grains, respectively. The hardness of the treated surface increases as the treatment time and temperature are increased, reaching a maximum value of 14.51 ± 2.60 GPa and modulus of elasticity of 243.70 ± 29.04 GPa, for treatment at 500 °C for 12h. Electrochemical measurements of open circuit potential and cyclic polarization, in synthetic seawater, showed that the cemented samples presented more noble behavior compared to the uncemented sample. The results of tribological tests show a considerable increase in the microabrasive wear resistance of the treated material, which is directly proportional to the hardness of the treated surface. The characterization of the worn area shows the occurrence of scratching and micro-rolling wear mechanisms. The results presented here confirm the potential of applying plasma carburizing treatment to super duplex stainless steel.
