Abstract: The professional career of medical doctor and anthropologist José Loureiro Fernandes over the decades of his scientific and academic career is investigated, mainly through correspondence and letters in the possession of institutions relevant to the study. A link is built between the efforts, gambles and setbacks that marked his intellectual path and the inauguration, in 1963, of the Museum of Archaeology and Popular Arts (MAAP), installed in the Jesuit College, in the municipality of Paranaguá, a building listed as a national historical heritage site by then National Historical and Artistic Heritage Board (DPHAN), in 1938. Loureiro's biography is analyzed, through his high school education and higher studies in Medicine, which reflected his later interest in archaeology, anthropology and folklore studies; his time as director of the Paranaense Museum, a position he assumed in 1936, is also discussed, in an attempt to draw a connection between his first experience at the head of a museum institution and the effects that this period would have on the idealization, organization and direction of the MAAP in the 1950s and 1960s. It also briefly investigates the importance of the agreement between DPHAN and the University of Paraná in bringing the museum project to fruition. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the French inspirations and influences on the MAAP's museographic proposal, as well as Loureiro's efforts to offer his apprentices opportunities to specialize in the field of Museology.
