The services of the Unified Health System are classified according to their complexity, which can be low, medium or high. The Emergency Care Units (UPA) belong to the middle level. Their attributions are the resolution of cases of a clinical nature and the provision of the first care to the patient, adult or pediatric. Ordinance no 1.601 determines that urgent pediatric care should be recommended on a regular basis in the UPAs. Thus, there is a need to understand the main demands of this service. Objective: To characterize the care provided to children up to 12 years of age attended at an Emergency Care Unit Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative and retrospective study. Reports from the information system (n=25.932) and, individually, 379 medical records were evaluated, a number obtained after sample calculation, of children up to 12 years of age attended at the UPA of a municipality in western Paraná, in the period from 06/01/2021 to 05/31/2022. This study complied with Resolution no 466/2012, which governs research with human beings in Brazil, and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Paraná, on 12/07/2022, under CAAE 63925822.7.0000.0102. Results and Discussion: In the 25.932 consultations, there was a prevalence of males and most of the consultations were classified as less urgent. The most used risk classification protocols were "Child malaise", "Diarrhea and/or vomiting" and "Concerned parents". The protocols with the highest proportion of emergency room visits were seizures and diabetes. The most used ICDs were for diseases with etiology in the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, as well as the main diagnoses. Of the 379 charts evaluated, the most prevalent age was children up to 1 year old. The main complaints were cough, fever and vomiting. Final considerations: The prevalence of "less urgent" care demonstrates the wrong demand by the population for the urgency and emergency unit
