Abstract: In 1834, while walking on the side of the Union Canal in Edimburgh, John Scott Russell, a naval engineer, observed the motion of a wave which assumed the form of a
solitary elevation and traveled along the canal for a long period of time without changing its form. Russell named it the wave of translation, which later on would come to be known as a solitary wave. The mathematical modeling for the profile of this wave was discovered only in 1865, when dutch mathematicians Diederik Korteweg and Gustav de Vries derived the KdV equation. The main goal of this dissertation is to study the derivation of the KdV equation. More precisely, we show how the KdV can be obtained from three different ways: through the Boussinesq equations, via potential theory and directly from the Euler equations. Besides, the mathematical representation of the solitary wave and conserved quantities are also discussed. The main approach that we employ in this study is asymptotic analysis through asymptotic expansions around the nonlinearity and dispersion parameters. We present the concepts, calculations and demonstrations in the simplest way possible so that this text could be accessible to any reader who is not familiarized with the theory
