Abstract: This work studies the controversy around the idea on the reunification of Reformation and Counter-Reformation christians, and the main currents of thought that both these movements represented, through the eventual solution that each one outlined for the discussion around Grace. That dissension was one of the subjects that divided philosophers and theologians of that time, having been crucial for theoretical disputes that reverberated, including conceptions about the relations between the attributes of God. The focus of this work is the examination of the theme from its reception by the philosopher G. W. Leibniz in his book Essays on Theodicy. The objective of this research is to understand how Leibniz sought to position himself in the face of the debate discussed in that book, which will further be referred only by Theodicy. The central question is based on the disputes between reformists and counter-reformists around grace. These disputes can be summarized in the question of the means of obtaining salvation, whether by gift, as supported by the first, or by merit, as supported by the second. For the reformers, grace was a gift, while for the counter-reformers it was a reward. Thus, in general, protestants believed in predestination and, catholics, in free will, regarding the way to achieve salvation. Leibniz advocated that a conciliation of Protestants and Catholics in a sort of Christian nation was possible, and he wrote his book Theodicy also with the purpose of arguing in favor of this idea from a philosophical point of view. This work aims, then, to expose Leibniz's search for a solution to the problem of grace, contextualizing the discussion between reformists and counter-reformists in his book Theodicy.
