Abstract: Geopolymers are a class of inorganic polymers obtained by activating an aluminosilicate precursor with an activator solution. However, like other cementitious materials, geopolymers are subject to cracking when subjected to tensile forces. The appearance of cracks contributes to the ingress of degradation agents into the interior of the material and reduces the durability of the material. The self-healing mechanism has the potential to increase the life of the geopolymer against its degradation agents. However, self-healing in geopolymeric materials is still poorly understood. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate self-healing through the incorporation of crystalline admixtures (AC) and expanding agents (AE) in metakaolin-based geopolymer with and without hydrated lime (CH) incorporation. For this purpose, 9 mixes with different contents of AC (0% and 1%), AE (0% and 1%), and CH (0%, 5%, and 10%) were prepared. Compressive strength, compression splitting, immersion absorption, and void index tests were performed to evaluate the effect of AC, AE, and Ch on the geopolymer properties. The specimens were cracked at 3 days of age and self-healing was verified for 112 days in the state of immersion and cycles with water. The compounds formed during self-healing and the microstructure of the matrix were evaluated by XRD and SEM/EDS analyses. The results showed that there was no self-healing in the mixtures without CH incorporation due to the insignificant calcium content in the material. Similarly, self-healing was negligible in the mixtures with 5% CH. Conversely, there was partial self-healing in the mixtures with 10% CH, and microscopic analysis indicated that self-healing was more efficient in the immersion condition. The mixture with AC showed better efficacy and the mixture with AE showed lower performance than the reference mixture. In conclusion, calcium from CH and the immersion condition were predominant for the occurrence of self-healing in geopolymers. Magnesium derived from CH of dolomitic origin did not influence self-healing. Calcite formation was identified as the main product of self-healing in mixtures at 10% CH. In addition, C-A-S-H gel and vaterite were also identified as products of self-healing. The incorporation of CH promoted an increase in compressive strength of 24.4% and 33.1% in the reference samples with 5% and 10% CH, respectively, compared to the mixture without CH. This effect is related to the densification of the matrix identified by SEM. In addition, the incorporation of AC also promoted the densification of the matrix, identified by the compressive strength. Finally, the SEM/EDS analyses showed that the incorporation of CH caused the coexistence of C-S-H, C-A-S-H, and N-M-A-S-H gels along with the N-A-S-H gel in the geopolymer matrix.
