Abstract : The extension project "SOS dente" aimed to transmit knowledge to students and teachers, evaluate the oral health condition of students and evaluate teachers' knowledge about dental trauma (TD). Educational actions aimed at post TD care and oral health were developed in three state schools in Curitiba and were aimed at elementary and high school students who attended educational lectures and received educational leaflets on the prevention of oral diseases and TD. A survey on the oral condition and the TD was carried out through clinical examination. The approach of the professors was carried out through the application of a questionnaire before and after the lecture on the TD, to verify the retention of knowledge. A total of 866 students were evaluated with a mean age of 14.7 years ± 0.5 and who presented 22.7% of caries, 25.9% gingivitis, 35.1% visible biofilm and 31.4% lingual coating and 6.8% had missing teeth, 33.3% were class II, 91.5% never used a mouthguard and 26.09% reported having suffered DT at home (42%) and at school (23%). Of the 62 teachers, most were women, between 40 and over 50 years of age and had a higher education. There was retention of knowledge in the difference in responses before and after the lecture on questions about dental fractures (p=0.001), intrusion (p=0.031), time of action after avulsion (p<0.001), reimplantation (p=0.001) and hygiene of the avulsed tooth (p<0.001). Most teachers reported not having prior knowledge about TD. Extension activities have a positive impact for the school and university community on teachers' knowledge and encourage greater attention to the prevention and management of TD in the school environment. The oral health condition of the students was regular and the report of TD was high. Long-term activities are needed to prepare teachers regarding to the management of dental trauma.
