Abstract: In this study, a three-dimensional model is employed to numerically investigate laminar natural convection in a cubic cavity filled with a heterogeneous porous medium formed by the deposition of randomly distributed spherical particles inside. The boundary conditions are defined so that two opposite vertical walls are kept at different constant temperatures (horizontal gradient temperature), while all the others are considered adiabatic. Three approaches were considered: a fluid-only case, an approximation as homogeneous porous media and a heterogeneous model considering the real structure of the solid particles. The influence of particle thermal conduction on the energy distribution inside the cavity was evaluated using the solid to fluid ratio K*, while the effects of the particles number (heterogeneous model) were studied from the variation of Np, for Rayleigh numbers ranging from 103 to 105. The results for the homogeneous approximation show a reduction in the Nusselt number Nu as K* increases, as a consequence of the increase in the effective thermal conductivity and the pressure drop induced by the porous medium. When the heterogeneous model is used, the opposite trend is observed, with Nu increasing as K* increases. For K* < 1, the particles act as thermal insulators, leading to an overall reduction in the Nusselt number when compared with the results obtained with the homogeneous approximation, while for K* > 1 the Nusselt number predicted by the heterogeneous model is significantly greater. The results considering the particle number variation showed that, for low values of Ra, as Np increases there is an increase in Nu, as a consequence of the increase in the fluid flow velocity. The opposite occurs for high values of Ra. Thus, a reduction in Nu is observed, since the higher concentration of particles impairs the fluid flow inside the cavity.
